Reflection Task 2: Digital Media
Digital media can be used in classrooms through YouTube videos and interactive types of media to enhance the learning experience for the students and also keeping it relevant as pen and paper, textbooks and work books are definitely ‘going out of fashion’. Due to the constant development of technology in the time that we live in the use of digital media is rapidly increasing.
The following screenshots and video clip is an interactive
video on first aid response for heart attacks, choking, learning CPR, using an
AED and putting someone in the recovery position. The website provides choices that
students must decide upon within a time limit which is shown in the corner of
the screen. Students are also given ‘hearts’ which indicates wrong or correct
choices. This can also cause a bit of a ‘competition’ between students to see
who can get the best average time, most hearts etc. which can also increase
engagement as the students are trying to remember the correct answer to get the
best time.

Safety, Legal and Ethical Aspects.
This website and interactive film are safe, free to use for
everyone and easy to use, it is also a very reliable source of information as
it is from the Resuscitation
Council UK which is a privately funded organisation and the interactive
videos are based off the global resuscitation guidelines. Some students may
find the interactive films uncomfortable to watch so viewer discretion should
be advised before either showing the students or letting them interact with the
films. Ethical aspects that could be monitored
could be that students don’t make any inappropriate remarks about the film or the
students interacting with it.
SAMR model
As the interactive film could be exchanged for a
YouTube clip to show the process of all four of the scenarios or be covered in
a PowerPoint during a lesson, it ranks as a low-level activity. However, I argue
the fact that it would be a lot better than both the YouTube and PowerPoint as
it gets students engaged and interacting with the content rather than them just
typing in into their laptops, writing it in their books, reading it out of a
book. It also saves students having to do the practical aspect of practicing
first aid as many of students struggle with this due to them being ‘embarrassed’
and it is common to see students messing around and not doing the practical
lesson properly therefore, they aren’t fully engaged and they are also
practicing incorrect technique.

Hey, Ryan! Love your interactive activity - a great example of digital media. It would be beneficial to relate this to a specific subject or group of students that would be participating in this activity for education in school. It is good to see how you understand and apply the SAMR model to your activities. Your screen clippings show explicitly the simplicity and quality of the video!
ReplyDeleteRyan! Great to see you took my comment last week about using titles! This way I found it much easier to read and see what you were addressing. You have also found a great resource that can be used in a couple of different subjects but it would have been nice had you maybe delved further into what subjects this could be used in. Otherwise, I loved the detailing and specifications in your writing, keep up the great work :)
ReplyDeleteHi Ryan,
ReplyDeleteGreat use of hyper links throughout your post, they support your writing well! Your interactive activity is a great way for students to gain experience and practice of CPR. Although I do agree with Bridgette, it would be great to know what subjects this media could be used for. Overall, love the work!
